Augustus Crow III, better known as Captain Crow is the main antagonist in the movie The Sea Beast.
He is a legendary sea monster hunter and captain of The Inevitable. He sails alongside his adoptive son, Jacob Holland.
He is voiced by Jared Harris.
Biography[]
Captain Crow is a legendary sea monster hunter and captain of The Inevitable. He is famous, written about in children's stories and welcome with great excitement in Three Bridges when he returns with his ship.
He is enraptured by a 30-year vendetta to capture a giant sea beast known as the Red Bluster, which causes him to sometimes make wrong decisions.
Throughout The Sea Beast[]
Captain Crow began the story deeply principled but fueled by the determination to capture a giant sea beast known as the Red Bluster. He believes Red to be a raging monster driven by nothing but violence. Believing that he is on the side of heroes and doing a great service to humanity, he has spent his life hunting and killing the great sea beasts of the ocean alongside his crew on the Inevitable. Some years ago, he rescued and adopted a young boy named Jacob Holland, a young boy who would later grow up to be an excellent hunter and next in line to captain The Inevitable after Crow retired or died. Crow and Jacob enjoyed a close relationship and Jacob was Crow's pride and joy.
Crow and his crew begin the movie in pursuit of the Red Bluster, which took Crow's eye many years ago. Just as they prepare to take on the beast, a crewperson realizes that another ship is under attack. Crow is prepared to continue pursuit of Red, fueled by his desperate determination to defeat it, but listens when he is reminded of the hunter's code. He orders the crew to assist the distressed ship, taking on that sea beast, the Brickleback. Throughout the fight, Crow can be seen keeping an eye on Jacob, indicating his care for him. Crow is nearly killed while attempting to take a seemingly-dead beast's horn as a trophy and evidence of their kill, but is saved by his adopted son, Jacob. Alive, and with evidence of the kill in hand, he and his first mate Sarah walk through the ship and realize the extent of damages. Rather than attempting to pursue the Red Bluster, he decides to return to shore and repair the ship, as well as receive payment from the crown for killing the beast.
They return to Three Bridges where they are met by a delighted town and a young Maisie attempting to find and speak with the Captain and crew to join them. The crew goes off to the taverns to drink. Later, Captain Crow, Sarah, and Jacob meet with the King and Queen, who tell them that the age of hunters is over and they will no longer be paid for their work. Instead, the navy will be taking over their duties, starting with The Imperator, captained by Admiral Hornagold. Infuriated, both by the disregard for the sailor's lives, as the Imperator is not suited for hunting, nor Hornagold experienced in hunting the beasts, as well as being thrown aside by the crown despite his life's work, Crow very nearly starts a fight with the navy and royal guard, only for Jacob to step in and organize a competition between the Inevitable and the Imperator. Should they fail, the age of hunters will be declared over. Their livelihood, and to their knowledge at the time, the fate of humanity, now lie in their hands- and in defeating the Red Bluster.
The crew sets back out to sea when they discover that a little girl, Maisie, has stowed away. Jacob wants to return her to shore at the nearest opportunity, but Crow, reminded of Jacob as a young boy and appreciating her strong-willed personality, decides to keep her aboard. However, he comes to regret this when they engage in battle with the Red Bluster. As the ship fights the beast, she begins to pull the ship into a self-made whirlpool after they manage to get lines attached to her. Faced with either letting the beast get away again or very likely dooming the ship and crew even if they kill her, Crow is overcome by his thirst for vengeance and determination to kill his quarry of thirty years, and refuses to give up chase. Maisie, realizing the damage being done and the danger, cuts the lines. She and Jacob end up overboard but later board a lifeboat, trying to get back to the ship. Crow, infuriated, demands for Jacob to give up the girl but Jacob, uneasy with the level of anger and worry about what he will do to Maisie, pleads that she is just a child. Overcome by his anger and Jacob standing against him, Crow puts Jacob at gunpoint. Red then swallows down Maisie, Jacob, and the little boat, and disappears into the sea. Crow immediately cries out Jacob's name, grief and horror overcoming him.
Believing his adopted son to be dead, Crow begins to descend into a downward spiral of grief, rage, and vengeance. He crosses his morals and breaks the hunter's code and meets with an elderly merchant, Gwen Batterbie, and pays for a weapon and poison that will take down the Bluster. He successfully injects the poison into Red when she attacks the ship and they tie her up while she is unconscious and set a course for Three Bridges after picking up Jacob. The two of them find an uneasy peace despite Jacob's misgivings about the entire affair and Crow's displeasure with Jacob's change of heart.
They arrive at Three Bridges, where Crow shows the King, Queen, and the people the sea beast, much to the royals' surprise and discomfort. He prepares to kill Red, but is stopped by Jacob. They fight, Crow believing Jacob has dishonored and betrayed him, and Jacob is injured. Meanwhile, Maisie tries to free Red with her small knife, but is aided by Sarah Sharpe, who cuts the rope in one go. The Red Bluster is freed and Crow gets a new lance from a statue, going to kill try and kill Red again. Red goes after Crow to kill him, but is stopped by Maisie, who stands between them. He realizes as Maisie speaks to Red, and then the kingdom, that Jacob and Maisie were right. As Maisie reveals the origins of sea monster lore, and that the humans were the one who began the war, he, along with the people, turn against the royals.
Personality[]
Tough, determined, and jaded, Crow is a complex character who has spent his life in pursuit of a single goal: to capture, defeat, and kill the Red Bluster.
Captain Crow is captivated by his 30-year quest to defeat the Red Bluster. Caught up in his quest, he is willing to do almost anything to kill the beast. Despite that, he is able to sometimes listen to the people around him, like his first mate Sarah, his adopted son Jacob, and later even Maisie. At the beginning of the movie, despite it meaning he would have to let the Bluster get away, he agreed to go save another ship after Jacob reminded him of the hunter's code. He is willing to push his crew hard, even putting them into lethal situations in pursuit of the beast, but cares deeply for his crew at the same time when he is not caught up by his determination to chase and defeat the sea beast. He was infuriated by the navy and the royals for being willing to send their sailors to their deaths out of hubris, despite later, in his desperation to defeat the beast and continue the hunting tradition, almost sending his own crew to the bottom of the sea.
Crow has a temper that can get the best of him, even holding Jacob, his adopted son, at gunpoint when Jacob interfered, and later fighting Jacob when the latter defended Red. He is irreverent of the status of royalty, willing to yell at them and almost get himself, Sarah, and Jacob killed or imprisoned fighting the navy. However, he is also deeply caring underneath his temper and spends much of the movie grieving over Jacob, who is presumed dead. In his grief and in search of vengeance, he crosses his own deeply held morals and breaks the hunter's code, utilizing a poison to stun and drag Red back to the capitol to be killed for the king and queen.
In the end, despite having spent his entire life as a hunter, he realizes after watching Maisie stop Red and talk to her that he cannot continue on this path and gives up his quest. In joining Jacob and Sarah in renouncing his role as a hunter, he shows his ability to change.

- Based on his character including losing an eye and be vengeful to a monster, it can be speculated that Crow was inspired by Captain Ahab from Moby Dick.
