Choi Hye-jeong (Korean: 최혜정) is a supporting antagonist in the Korean drama series The Glory. She is portrayed by Cha Joo-young.

Biography[]

Choi Hye-jeong is from a poor family who run a laundry business. As a teenager, she befriended the popular, rich kids by being their crony. She and her friends bullied at least three girls including Moon Dong-eun. They burned, assaulted and mocked her. Hye-jeong did the grunt work of summoning the victims, holding them down, prying keys from the gym teacher by making out with him, and running around fetching snacks to earn the favour of her friends but they still belittled Hye-Jeong for coming from a blue-collar family. They kept her around and even took her on a ski trip with them, so she accepted her low rank among them.

Now, as an adult, Hye-jeong fulfilled her teenage dream to be a flight attendant and is desperate to marry rich. The dynamic with her friends is just as toxic as it used to be, with Hye-jeong trying and failing to appear well off and successful to them only for them to humiliate and insult her.

Throughout The Glory[]

Throughout the show, Hye-jeong is shown to be the least malicious to Dong-eun out of her friends, but still willing to do their dirty work. Hye-jeong is desperate to blend in with her old money group by trying to come off as classy and cultured, but they tear her down for her crassness and ignorance of high society. Hye-jeong is still so concerned about their approval that she wears a client’s designer dress from her parents’ dry cleaning store. She secured an engagement to a rich but loathsome man only to break it off for a chance to marry her old friend Jae-jun and raise a child with him. Dong-eun’s revenge on her is complete when her friends reiterate that she is trash to them and Jae-jun coldly discards her.

Personality[]

Among the bullies, Hye-jeong is probably the least awful character. In a way, she was led astray by the rest ‒ they mentioned she would have been the “next” Dong-eun if the latter didn’t quit school. With no other options, she listened to their instructions and participated in bullying the innocent.

However, her obsession with climbing the social ladder and love for luxury goods was no doubt a turn-off. She was willing to marry a richer, older guy to level up her status, but she immediately broke off the engagement when Jae-jun offered her a chance to be together.

Hye-jeong proves herself to be quite cunning, although not on the same caliber as Jeon Jae-joon and Park Yeon-jin. She manages to manipulate Lee Sa-ra into turning against Park Yeon-jin with just a few words, and fools Park Yeon-jin into getting a plastic surgery, allowing Moon Dong-Eun to extract DNA from her which would later lead to her downfall. Moon Dong-eun herself, claimed that Hye-jeong's mask of kindness was crafted well, but had many sloppy areas, which eventually lead to her eventually being blackmailed and coerced into becoming Dong-euns pawn.

Despite her role in the bully group, Hye-jeong is not inherently evil like her friends and is shown to act like them only so they will accept her. Her insecurity about being poor leads her to repeatedly humiliate herself. Although her salary is not small and she became a flight attendant on her own, she has low self-esteem, hence why constantly craves luxury goods and her friends' approval.

Appearance[]

In high school, Hye-jeong was the most colourful and original of the students. She wore embroidered t-shirts under her open school shirt, had blunt bangs with curled hair and wore lots of accessories. As an adult, her hair is kept in a black permed bob. She is tall with a full figure, often clothed in tight fitting clothing. In one scene, she removes a shirt in front of Yeon-jin who admires on her breast enhancements.

Appearances[]

Trivia[]

• In high school Hye-jeong was pushed to let a gym teacher take advantage of her so the bullies could receive the gym keys.

• Hye-jeong endures slut shaming from her friends and her future mother-in-law but only flirts with men with whom she can progress socially. She breaks her loveless engagement to be with her old friend instead. Unlike the richer girls Hye-jeong didn’t have family money and access to better education to help her succeed so she resorted to using her capital as a female in Korean society.
