Biography[]
Dickie is the son of shipping magnate Herbert Greenleaf. While Dickie is in Italy, his father hires Tom Ripley to persuade Dickie to return to the United States and join the family business. Tom is an acquaintance of Dickie, who exaggerates his friendship with Dickie to gain Herbert's trust. Tom's acceptance of this job is the first step into a complex life of deceit, fraud and murder.

Throughout Ripley[]
While living, he is the leader of the pack, the object of desire of his parents, Tom and Marge who all want him for their own. While he is the muse, he also controls the action, instigating most outings and the friendship forming between the 3, navigating emotional context as well. He also serves as the omniscient, guiding Tom through the do’s and dont’s of living well in Italy, even beyond the grave serves as Tom’s conscience.
Personality[]
Dickie is a kind, generous and decent person. He is mild mannered yet decisive and adventurous; still trying to find himself while living a dream life in Italy, focusing on hobbies like painting because he is in a position to do what he wishes, and to the misery of his parents, avoiding returning home. He has a trusting nature perhaps gullible and perhaps, moreso, he is accustomed to people revering him for his good looks, charm and privilege. He is powerful; arrogant in an attractive way, and accustomed to making the decisions amongst his friends. He enjoys living in his bubble - going to the beach, swimming, sailing, having a few drinks, painting, reciting poetry, traveling to see Caravaggio paintings, and Marge.
Physical appearance[]
Tall, naturally athletic, collegiate boy-ivy-leaguer, who as a 30-something man now defines casual elegance wearing fine Italian, linen suits. He has a perfect wave in his combed, blond haïr and expensive aviator sunglasses, He wears Farragamo loafers and a chunky gold ring with a large black stone on his left ring finger, the latter symbolizing status and possibly connection to family while running away, and perpetual bachelordom.
