Geppetto is the tritagonist in the movie Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio. He is voiced by David Bradley.
Biography[]
Geppetto was an Italian woodcarver who was doted on his son, Carlo, who assisted him sometimes on his work. One day, the priest of his village hired him to build a statue of Jesus in their local church. Unfortunately, when Geppetto made the finishing touches to the statue, Carlo forgot his pine cone at the same time a bombing plane let go of their bombs to "make their ballast lighter", one bomb hit the church and Carlo died in the blast. After Carlo died, Geppetto became overcome with grief. He grieved for many years and turned to drinking. He even stopped working on the statue of Jesus, which the priest had hired him to carve.
20 years after Carlo died and World War II was about to begin, Geppetto, in a drunken rage over the loss of Carlo and the pine which grew from the boy's pine cone, cut down the tree.
Throughout Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio[]
Geppetto carves the wooden boy, Pinocchio, out of the trunk of a tree that grew over the grave of Carlo. The creation of Pinocchio gives Geppetto another chance at fatherhood, though he is reluctant to call him his son when he is brought to life.
