Harry Bingham is a character in the period drama series Transatlantic. He is portrayed by Luke Thompson.

Biography[]

Harry is the Vice Consul at the American Consulate. He defies his boss, Consul General Graham Patterson's refusal to issue US entry visas to refugees. Harry secretly meets with Varian Fry to deliver visas that he created by forging Graham's signature.

Throughout Transatlantic[]

Harry secretly meets up with Varian Fry after learning of US Consul General Graham Patterson's stance on the war. Harry was told that he was not allowed to issue visas to "pinkos", prisoners of war, or Jewish people. He told Varian to come to him directly for visas.[1]

Harry broke into Graham Patterson's office after hours to make several hundred visas by forging Graham's signature. These visas were given to the refugees leaving Marseille by boat the next day. When Graham discovered this, he fired Harry.

Trivia[]

  • In real life, Hiram "Harry" Bingham IV (b. 1903, d. 1988) was the son of a U.S. senator. He was at odds with the rest of the American consulate with regard to immigration policy. An estimated 2,500 refugees were able to flee to safety because of Bingham's "visas of freedom" in just the 10 months he worked at the consulate. "He has a heart of gold," Fry wrote of Bingham. "He does everything he can to help us, within American law."[2]
  • Luke Thompson, who portrays Hiram "Harry" Bingham, also did the French dubbing for his character, as Luke grew up in France and speaks fluent French.[3]
