Jacob Holland is the main protagonist in the movie The Sea Beast voiced by Karl Urban. He is a well-known sea monster hunter who sails aboard the Inevitable, alongside his adoptive father, Captain Crow.
Biography
Jacob Holland is one of the most famous sea monster hunters. He is a valiant warrior whose reputation precedes him. Legend has it that he killed at least four sea beasts in two days.
Jacob sails aboard the Inevitable, hunting sea beasts alongside his adoptive father, Captain Crow. He joined the crew as a young, orphaned boy. He has hopes of eventually becoming the captain of The Inevitable.
Throughout The Sea Beast
While at Three Bridges, Jacob Holland went to a bar where he was approached by Maisie Brumble, a young enthusiastic girl who wanted to join the crew on The Inevitable. Jacob did not take her seriously and, upon hearing that she lived in a children's home in Guelston, decided to send her away on a carriage back to Guelston.
Later, Maisie stowed away on the ship by hiding in a barrel. She was allowed to stay on the boat, as Captain Crow wanted to focus on killing the Red Bluster, instead of bringing Maisie back to shore.
During The Inevitable's attack on the Red Bluster, Maisie cut the ropes attached to the Red Bluster to save both the crew on the ship and the Red Bluster. When Captain Crow discovered this, he was angry at Maisie for disobeying him and ordered Jacob Holland to bring Maisie to him. When Jacob refused, Captain Crow held them at gun point. Seeing this, the Red Bluster swallowed them whole and brought them to an island. On the uncharted island, they came across Blue, a small, gelatinous monster. Maisie wanted Blue as a pet.
When Maisie and Jacob were attacked by the Purple Crustacean, the Red Bluster came to their defense and attacked the Purple Crustacean. It ended up leaving them alone.
The attack left a hole in their boat. Jacob was adamant that they would use the boat anyway, but Maisie asked the Red Bluster to transport them. She carried the boat on her back. Later, Maisie helped pull out all the spears that were stuck on the Red Bluster's back.
Seeing Jacob struggle to spear fish, the Red Bluster swam in circles to force the fish to jump out of the water, helping them catch enough fish.
When Maisie, Jacob and Blue arrived at Rum Pepper Island, Jacob vowed to never hunt sea monsters again. Shortly afterwards, Red noticed that The Imperator ship was on the other side of the mountain and charged towards them, attacking the boat. Maisie and Jacob tried to stop Red, but Red charged anyway, only stopping after Jacob Holland shot her with a spear. Red became angry and wanted to attack Jacob and Maisie. A gunshot was heard in the background, and it was the sound of The Inevitable. Red turned her attention to the Inevitable, and left Maisie and Jacob.
The Red Bluster attempted to attack The Inevitable as well, but stopped when Captain Crow injected her with a poison that Gwen Batterbie had created. The poison make her unconscious, which allowed the sea hunters to tie her in rope, and drag her Three Bridges, where Captain Crow planned to kill her.
At Three Bridges, just as Captain Crow was about to stab her with a spear, he was stopped by Jacob Holland. Meanwhile, Maisie was secretly cutting the rope using her small knife. She was found by Sarah Sharpe, who cut the rope with her larger knife in one go. The Red Bluster was free from the rope and collapsed on different parts of the kingdom, damaging the building. She saw Captain Crow and went directly to kill him, only to be stopped by Maisie. Maisie gave a speech on the origins of the sea monster lore and accused the royal family of inventing the story for their own benefit. She explained that sea monsters had learned to become violent, as a result of being attacked by hunters. As people realised the truth, they turned against the king and queen, who ran away. Jacob once again vowed to never hunt sea monsters and the Red Bluster was set free.
Personality
Jacob is a natural-born leader with a heart of gold and will do anything to protect his people. However, unlike Maisie, he is much less willing to question conventional wisdom and consider the possibility that sea beasts don’t mean them harm, but eventually agreed with Maisie after the Red Bluster helped him and Maisie on several occasions.
Physical appearance
Jacob is a tall man with sandy blonde hair and a large and broad nose. He is muscular.
