Sergio Ciscar is a character in the Spanish crime drama limited series Muted. He is portrayed by Arón Piper.
Biography[]
Sergio is the son of Dr. Blanca Polo, a psychiatrist. He is very intelligent with an IQ of 154. As soon as his mother realised Sergio's talent, she focused on his education, but something went wrong almost immediately. Sergio alternated academic success with a progressive emotional detachment from his family.
On March 23, 2016, Sergio Ciscar murdered his parents by pushing them off the balcony of their apartment. He was sent to prison.
While in prison, his fan Marta Ortega sent him letters and met him more than once. They had a private visit 6 months before Sergio's release.
After 6 years in prison, on April 16, 2022, Sergio was released 9 months early for good behaviour, as he worked on a greenhouse while in prison. He returned to his parents' apartment, which he inherited, despite murdering them.
After his release from prison, Sergio was secretly monitored by a team of psychiatrists, led by Ana Dussuel, who want to determine his threat to society. They watched him from hidden cameras in his apartment and public CCTV. They also followed him. They monitored him daily and did behaviour analyses.
Sergio has selective mutism. He is religious and Natanael, an evangelical priest, is one of the few people he speaks to.
Marta and Sergio develop feelings for each other, but she finds it challenging due to Sergio's selective mutism. Marta and Sergio's relationship causes complications as Eneko is deeply in love with Marta and believes Sergio is dangerous.[1]
Throughout Muted[]
After Sergio's release from prison, his fan Marta Ortega met up with him. She handed him a handwritten note with Noa's phone number. Sergio and Noa lost contact after the murders. However, Sergio could not contact Noa using the number, as Marta had been out of contact for a while. Sergio felt deceived and confronted Marta about it. He revealed that he received many letters from fans, but only responded to Marta, because Marta knew Noa from teaching her piano.
After Ana Dussuel, the psychiatrist who was observing Sergio talked to Marta, she went to Sergio's apartment. They watched Sergio and Noa's childhood videos. Just as Sergio was about to open up emotionally, Marta received a call from her boyfriend Eneko. She left, but to the disappointment of the psychiatrists, who were keen to find out Sergio's motive for murdering his parents.
Later, Eneko caught Marta and Sergio outside together.
Sergio showed up to one of Eneko's apartment inspections. Eneko tried to remain calm and gave Sergio a tour of the apartment.
When Marta's boyfriend, Eneko, learned of their relationship, he became very angry. He and a group of friends confronted Sergio outside his apartment building and beat him up. Meanwhile, Marta copied Sergio's childhood videos to the psychiatrists. The group of psychiatrists became increasingly concerned while watching Sergio getting beat up, but Ana insisted on getting all the videos before intervening. Later, Eneko and his friends reported to the police that Sergio assaulted them, sending Sergio to prison again.
Sergio's mentor, Natanael Torrija, rallied outside the prison for Sergio's release. An anonymous number sent Natanael a video of Sergio's assault, showing that Sergio was actually the victim of the assault, not the aggressor. Natanael met Eneko and pressured him into retracting his statement. Sergio was set free.
The psychiatrists watched Sergio's childhood videos, and saw that he was being abused by his parents. His mother, Blanca Polo, treated Sergio as a test subject, giving him medication and insulting him to test how he would react to a change in emotion.
